The Round Rock Express got back into the win column on Thursday night. After dropping five out six against the Albuquerque Isotopes in the previous series, the Express headed out West to kick off a 12-game road trip starting with Sacramento River Cats.
The Express got things going in the top of the first inning, with Delino DeShields drew a lead-off walk to start the game. The Express were able to load the bases after Yonny Hernandez and Yohel Pozo both managed to get base hits. Then with the base's load, first baseman Curtis Terry managed to draw an RBI walk that brought in Deshields, putting the Express up early 1-0.
In the top of the third inning, the Express would get things going as Leody Taveras would manage to draw a walk. With Taveras on first, Pozo would come up and single, putting two runners on for third baseman Ryan Dorow, who hit a three-run home, putting the Express up 4-0.
The River Cats would start to get things going in the bottom half of the third inning as second baseman Peter Maris would kick off things with a leadoff double. Mauricio Dubon would single putting two runners on for left fielder Jason Krizan, who then drive in Maris on an RBI base hit to cut into the Express lead down to 4-1.
The Express would get a little insurance in the top of the fifth inning as Pozo would hit the second home run of the game for the Express, extend their lead to 5-1. The River Cats would not be able to put anything together as the bullpen for the Express would only allow three hits while totaling 10 strikeouts. The Express would win game one of the series with a final score of 5-1.
Wes Benjamin (1-2, 7.52 ERA) will start on Friday night for the Express. Opposing Benjamin for the River Cats will be Aaron Sanchez (0-1, 9.82). Sanchez is currently on a rehab assignment for the San Francisco Giants.
